[how to use this wiki]

navigating around e e learning

there are numerous ways to navigate around eelearning. here are descriptions of the menus available to you.

the wiki navigation menu

at the top of every page, you will find this menu. the buttons are:

  • home - this brings you back to the front page of the entire wiki.
  • edit page - this takes you to the wiki code for the page. this is where you go if you wish to make a change, addition, or deletion directly to the page. please be sure you're familiar with pbwiki style before making comments or changes using this method.
  • new page - you can create a new page in eelearning by using this button. this is not the preferred method for creating a new page because it does not link the page to anywhere in the wiki. see creating a new page tutorial below for the preferred method.
  • comments - clicking this button will take you to any comments which others have written regarding this page. it also is the place to create a comment about the page as well. for the web 2.0 reviewsection of this wiki - it is preferred that you use this feature instead of editing dave's opinions.
  • files - if you'd like to upload a file to share with others, you can do so here. please don't get carried away.

the eelearning navigation menu

stuck between the eelearning nameplate and the sidebar you will find the eelearning navigation menu. this will help you navigate within and between the various sections of eelearning. (there is only one active section at the moment.) the buttons may change from page to page, but they will be a subset of the following:

  • topic home - whatever topic you are in, this will take you back to the home page for that topic. these are the topics which are listed on the wiki home page.
  • summary table - this is your shortcut to the summary table for the web 2.0 review topic.
  • discussion - this will take you to a discussion forum for the topic. here you can discuss the general topic or any of the specific issues in the topic area.
  • eelearning wiki - same as the "home" button in the wiki navigation, this button will take you back to the home page of the entire wiki.
  • eelearning blog - this will take you back to the eelearning blog front page. you will be leaving eelearning wiki when you click this button.
  • faq - this will take you to a page where you can explore questions others have asked about eelearning wiki or ask your own question. instructions for the faq appear at the top of the page.

the sidebars

on the righthand side of each page you will find a sidebar with three tabs at the top. the content of the sidebar is the same wiki-wide.

  • quick start - this sidebar will have additional links to key places in eelearning and beyond.
  • recent activity - this is a list of who's been logged in and what they've been looking at. (probably of more interest to me than anyone, but it's a standard part of pbwiki.)
  • sidebar - this is the space where general information about eelearning wiki and announcements about what's new or changed will be found. hopefully this will be the default view when you enter eelearning, but if not, just hit the tab and it will open.

the footer

at the bottom of each page you will find some green boxes with various links and functions available. some of the key ones of note include:

  • history - you can see all of the revisions made to this page with the name of the person who made the revision.
  • page source - shows you the wiki style for the page. this is the same as the code you see when you hit "edit page" on the wiki navigation, but this is non-editable.
  • create PDF - you can save this page as a pdf. please note that some formatting does not render correctly in the pdf version. pbwiki is working on this.
  • tags - the words in italics are metadata tags for the page. clicking on one will present you with a list of all of the pages which have been tagged with that term or phrase.
  • show all pages - if you're totally lost with the navigation provided clicking on this link will take you to a list of all the pages on eelearning.

tutorials

as soon as i can put them together and post them, you'll find tutorials on how to:

  • adding comments to a page
  • editing a page
  • adding a new page to eelearning

e e learning style

while most wikis have similar mark-up conventions (i.e, how to bold or italicize text, create a table, etc.) each does have its peculiarites. if you try something and it doesn't render the way you thought it would, check the wiki styles page on pbwiki's home site.

wiki style, html, and other mark-up.

the preferred method of encoding in pbwiki is the pbwiki style. this is a modified, simplified language compared to html. the editing page handles the most common formatting issues for you with buttons at the top of the editing window. one of the nice things about pbwiki is that it allows you to use html intermingled with the wiki style. so if you know html, you are welcome to use it. but please keep it simple so that others will understand what you have encoded and can freely edit if necessary in their revisions. pbwiki does accept javascript, but i ask that you please contact me (dcleesfo at gmail dot com) before adding it to any of the pages here.

lower case letters

e e learning uses a style that calls for no capitalization - of anything. if you see a capitalized letter, it's either a typo on my part or a system control that i haven't figured out how to change yet. go ahead and give it a try. it ain't as easy as you might think.

hyperlinks

in e e learning, all hyperlinks are red until you cursor over them and then they invert to white type on a red background. this differs from the standard pbwiki style of underlining hyperlinks (which you might see occasionally because I haven't gotten to re-coding those links yet). you can assume that if it's red (underlined or not), it's a hyperlink.

while wikis tend to follow similar rules and styles, no two are exactly alike. if you find that something you are trying to do doesn't work.
