[shadows]

summary of the application

shadows is another variation on the theme of social bookmarking tools. its goal is to create a "shadow page" behind any and every page on the internet on which the content of that page is discussed and rated by those who have bookmarked it. it allows you to indicate whether the site you are linking to is for your private use or to be viewed by anyone. you can also designate a site as "not for work." shadows provides easy cross reference via tags to all those who have used a tag and the sites that have used a tag.

personal effectiveness xxx

i really like the concept behind shadows. unlike any of the other social bookmarking applications i've personally checked out, it brings any comments regarding a site all to one page. thus it's easy to see the conversation that revolves around that particular page. unfortunately, i have yet to find a page that has more than a few comments on its shadow page. perhaps it's due to the scope of the concept. you could have thousands of comments, but spread over the hundreds of millions pages available, you might never run into another comment. or it may have been a good idea too late in the game, but the reality is that there isn't much there there, when it comes to shadows.

learning effectiveness xxx

as i've said with blinklist and de.lici.ous previously, i'm not sure that social bookmarking applications are particularly powerful learning tools in the first place. shadows seems to be not among the average of them either.

coolness xxx

i think the concept of shadows is very cool. unfortunately, coolness in the social bookmarking space is dependent upon how "social" the environment is. here shadows falls short. until a great deal more people start using shadows, it will languish in the shadows of the big boys.
