summary of the application

linkedin was one of the first real success stories in social networking applications. it borrows from the six degrees concept to help business people network for jobs/employees, peers for sharing best practices, and re-uniting old colleagues. Fill out a profile completely and it looks just like a resume. Invite friends to link to your profile and gain access, through their referral, to their network. while you're at it, write an endorsement for your former and current colleagues and ask them to do the same in return. there are numerous add-ons to Linkedin which help you find contacts at jobs listed on many of the job boards, do your networking tasks in microsoft outlook, and join special affinity groups. the base service is free. four levels of premium service are offered ranging from $5/month to $200/month.

 

personal effectiveness xxx

for some time now, i've felt that linkedin really nailed the paradigm for social networking sites. it very much "stars" the participants, focusing in on each person's resume. they've done a very nice job of building in tools which require members to communicate with other members in order to acheive tasks. The endorsement tool is great. it allows members to write a short paragraph about a present or former colleague, vendor or client and attach it to that entry in the person's profile.

 

educational effectiveness xxx

i see little use for linkedin in formal learning settings. But the possibilities to drive informal learning are enormous. You can find a new mentor or mentee easily. You can find professionals who work in the same specific niche as you do. Benchmarking with similar companies should be very easy to establish given the personal method of introductions and referrals.

 

coolness xxx

i find linkedin to be very enjoyable to use and very nicely designed. the fact that I have at least 20 former colleagues who i have now reconnected with because of linkedin is way cool.
