[pbwiki]

Summary of the application

pbwiki is a popular wiki farm that provides free, easy-to-use wikis for anyone to put their content on the internet. their marketing claim is that creating a wiki is as easy as making a peanut butter sandwich. once made public, a pbwiki can be read by anyone. if the owner of the wiki makes the password to the wiki available to others, those who have access can change anything on the wiki by simply editing the page. pbwiki uses "wiki style" coding which is a simplified html code. however, standard html code works as well. for a small fee, the owner of the wiki can have access to the css coding for the site to change the look and feel of the wiki. other premium services (lock pages, hidden pages, change your page's favicon, etc.) can be added at varying premium rates. pbwiki claims to have over 55,000 wiki's and hundreds of thousands of pages of content.

personal effectiveness xxx

it's no secret that i'm a fan of pbwiki, since eelearning wiki is one of the 55,000 wikis they serve. what do i like about pbwiki? their claim of ease of use is dead one. the entry threshold is almost non-existent. you learn a little bit of "wiki style" and you can do just about anything you want. going the next step up to adjusting the cascading style sheet for your wiki really isn't to hard and their user forums are active and incredibly helpful.

mixing in html code with wiki style is not a problem (i found it to be with other wikis). adding javascript to render outside content is a no brainer as well. the logo badge on the web20review page is an example.

pbwiki makes putting content on the web simple and intuitive. the only limit to what i feel i can do is my own imagination.

learning effectiveness xxx

wikis are among the most collaborative tools created in the web 2.0 evolution of the internet. more free form than blogs they provided individuals and teams with a "tabla rasa" for project development and collaboration. pbwiki provides the freest form available amongst the wiki farms out there, which in my mind is a positive. other wikis do provide preformed widgets and tools that might make some tasks simpler. but my experience is that you very quickly run into barriers to what you want to be doing and find yourself hemmed into working the way the program dictates. to me, that's not a wiki.

if a learning experience is intended to be exploratory and collaborative, i think a pbwiki, or a collection of pbwikis, is a a minimal aspect of the toolset.

coolness xxx

wikis are one of the major power tools of web 2.0 - along with blogs, telephony tools, mash-ups and collaborative work environments (which usually include a wiki component). any true wiki is cool, but pbwiki, in my mind is the coolest. plain and simple, if you are web 2.0, you've got a pbwiki in your repertoire.
